Every store has a story. Ours started in a small Chicago apartment in 2018, out of a pretty simple frustration: buying everyday things had become harder than it needed to be. Online shopping was turning into a maze of confusing listings and products that looked great in photos but fell apart after a week.
That’s the short version. Let me back up a little.
OIUUWMD started because our founder, a longtime Chicago resident, was tired of running around to three different stores just to stock up on basic household items, kitchen tools for the apartment, cables for her work desk, a decent jacket for the brutal Midwest winters. When she shopped online, the options were usually one of two things: rock-bottom prices with sketchy quality, or big-brand prices that felt way too steep for what was basically plastic and packaging.
So in 2019, she and a tiny team launched OIUUWMD as a bit of an experiment. What if an online general store focused on the things people actually buy every day, but actually paid attention to quality? Not luxury quality. Just products that do what they say, hold up longer than one season, and don’t cost a fortune. That idea stuck, and it’s still what guides us every day.
What OIUUWMD Is Today
Today, OIUUWMD is a general-merchandise store serving customers across the USA and Canada. We carry a wide range of categories: home and living, kitchen and dining, electronics accessories, apparel, outdoor and sports gear, personal care, toys and hobbies, and everyday essentials. That breadth is intentional. We want to be the kind of store you remember exists when you need something, whether that’s a new water bottle, a phone mount for your car, a set of storage bins, or a birthday gift for a kid.
How We Pick What We Sell
Here’s something that might surprise you: we don’t stock everything. We know that sounds odd for a general store, but it’s the whole point. Our buyers test items before anything makes it onto the site. We look at the materials, the stitching, the buttons, the battery life, the packaging. If we wouldn’t use it in our own homes, we don’t list it. That approach means we say no to a lot of stuff, and we’re okay with that. We’d rather have a smaller catalog of things we genuinely stand behind than a giant list of items we’re unsure about.
We also keep honesty front and center. No fake “was $79.99, now $19.99” countdown games. Our prices are straightforward and fair. We make a reasonable margin so we can stay in business, but we don’t inflate original prices to make our sales look bigger than they really are.
Doing Things a Little Better
Packaging matters to us. We use recyclable materials wherever we can, and we avoid burying a single small item in layers of plastic. If a shipment ever arrives damaged because we skimped on protection, that’s on us, and we’ll make it right.
Customer support is another thing we take seriously. We know issues happen. A product arrives damaged, or a package gets delayed in transit. When that happens, our support team replies within one business day, and we handle refunds or replacements without a lengthy back-and-forth. For most items, we accept returns within 30 days of delivery.
